The following is needed in order to have a sustainable SharePoint environment:
1) Maintain an organized up-to-date inventory of assets
2) Monitor risk across the silos of departments, teams and subsidiaries
3) Search for and handle out of date content, technologies and misconfigurations
4) Manage and monitor 3rd party applications
5) Improve and make changes accordingly to security across the environment
